Rockstar's Phil Hooker told Edge he has memorised the bus routes in Leonida, and that GTA 6 public transport carries players as passengers.

Phil Hooker, Rockstar's head of development, says in an Edge feature, reported by GamesRadar, that GTA 6 will have working public transport in Leonida. According to Insider Gaming, buses and trains will carry the player as a passenger, which GTA V did not allow.

How will public transport work in GTA 6?

Hooker says he is obsessed with making sure the buses in GTA 6 always turn up.

Hooker says he is obsessed with making sure the buses in GTA 6 always turn up. He makes the point in a feature in Edge magazine that GamesRadar has published. In his account, he will decide mid-session to take the bus to wherever he is going, and he has memorised all of the routes.

The Edge piece opens at Rockstar North, the Rockstar Games studio in Edinburgh, where the magazine was invited a few weeks before launch. Insider Gaming, a games news site, took Hooker's quote and presented it as proof that Leonida will have a working bus and rail system. Keep the two layers apart: the words are Hooker's, and the claim about trains is Insider Gaming's reading.

I’m obsessed with making sure they always turn up. So, anywhere in the middle of playing, I’ll just go: right, we’re going to get the bus to where we’re going. I’ve memorised all of the routes

Rockstar has not published a line map, a route count or a list of stops alongside that statement. Hooker talks about the bus as someone who uses it while playing, not as someone reading out a spec sheet.

What changes compared with GTA V?

The main difference is that public transport stops being scenery.

The main difference is that public transport stops being scenery. According to Insider Gaming, buses in GTA V could be hijacked but could not take the player as a passenger, and the train was a shuttle that never finished its run. The site notes that neither vehicle is new to the series, only that earlier games handled them in a limited way.

GTA V came out on 17 September 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, so the comparison spans more than one console generation. Insider Gaming adds that the developers have improved the behind-the-scenes workings of the game, which gives Leonida a living world, though Rockstar has not said how.

What does it change for the player?

It means crossing Leonida no longer requires driving.

It means crossing Leonida no longer requires driving. Insider Gaming infers that when using public transport as a commute, the player will not need to worry about fuel or the damage to their car. That is the site's interpretation, not an explanation from Rockstar.

What Hooker does say is that buses should always arrive, which lets a player plan a trip instead of improvising it. To get your bearings, you can go through the map of Leonida and the known vehicles. For everything else, what we know about GTA 6 collects what has been confirmed so far.

What is still unconfirmed about transport in Leonida?

We still do not know how many lines there are, where they go or what timetables they follow.

We still do not know how many lines there are, where they go or what timetables they follow. Insider Gaming points out that it remains to be seen whether these vehicles will work as an escape from a crime scene and whether they can run late. Hooker does not address either point in the published quote.

There is also no official description of the train beyond what Insider Gaming reports. Rockstar Games may clarify it in the material before the 19 November 2026 launch, and the first reviews will test it. Release date, price and editions have their own page.
