GTA 6: Rockstar Confirms That Your PS5 Code Doesn't Work on Other Platforms (Xbox Does)

Purchasing the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI does not grant immediate access to the installed game: the package includes a code that must be redeemed on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store to download the full game. This is the same system already used by other major console releases, designed to lower manufacturing costs and speed up the release date.

The problem arises when redeeming that code. Rockstar states this, in English, on its own support website:

“We recommend purchasing and playing from a store in the country where your platform account is registered, to avoid activation issues.”

In practice: if your account isn’t from the same country (or region) where you bought the boxed copy, the code may not redeem.

Rockstar divides the globe into 9 regional blocks for PS5: North America, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Latin America, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the rest of Asia, and a ninth block comprising EMEA/Oceania—which is where Spain falls. A code purchased within a region can only be redeemed with a PSN account registered in THAT SAME region—not one outside of it.

Japan also has its own fine print: due to local regulations, its code expires 170 days after launch (November 19, 2026). After that period, the code becomes invalid even if it has never been used.

On Xbox, the story is radically different. Rockstar confirms that Xbox Series X|S codes have no regional lock: you can buy the physical box in any country and redeem the code from any account, regardless of where it’s registered.

Here’s the part that’s going to cause the most buzz. Importing a cheaper physical copy from another country is a common tactic among console gamers. With GTA 6, that tactic still works perfectly on Xbox… but it might leave you with a useless code on PS5.

The classic example: someone with a Spanish PSN account who buys the physical edition in Brazil or Latin America to save a few euros might end up with a code that their console simply rejects. Saving 15 or 20 euros by importing the copy could end up costing you dearly: a code that isn’t worth anything, even for free.

The controversy is already making the rounds in English-language media (Insider Gaming, GTA BOOM, Notebookcheck, among others) precisely for this reason: it’s unequal treatment between the two consoles for the same game, and Rockstar hasn’t explained why.
