The Game Awards set a November 20 cutoff and GTA 6, launching on November 19, makes it with exactly one day to spare. Here is what we know so far.

The Game Awards 2026 has published its eligibility rules, and GTA 6 squeaks in: games must be commercially available by Friday, November 20, 2026 at 9 p.m. Pacific time, and Rockstar's game launches on November 19. One day of margin, not a minute more.

What the rules say

According to Instant Gaming News, which reproduces the text from the show's official website, a game has to be on sale to players before that November 20 cutoff. The Players' Voice category runs longer, with a deadline of November 30, 2026. Insider Gaming and DualShockers quote the very same sentence, so the date itself is not in dispute.

DualShockers adds a few other criteria from the FAQ: the game must be finished and not in early access, DLC and remasters can compete in every category, and live-service games qualify if they have been updated consistently this year. Standard stuff, except for the date.

GTA 6 and the Game Awards: one day makes the difference

After two delays, launch is set for November 19. Under these rules, any new slip of more than a day would push the game out of this year's show. That is our own reading of the dates, not something the organizers have said. Insider Gaming notes that a fresh delay looks unlikely at this stage, and Rockstar recently said it will arrive on time, as we covered on the blog.

DualShockers raises another point: with launch less than a month before the ceremony, the judges will have very little time to play and assess it. It also remarks, with some humor, that leaving the game out would have caused an internet uproar.

The competition is not standing still

It has been a strong year. Insider Gaming names Resident Evil Requiem, Control Resonant, Big Walk, Forza Horizon 6, Mina the Hollower and Pokémon Pokopia as possible rivals. DualShockers adds Pragmata, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Silent Hill: Townfall, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter and Palworld, and points out that Capcom has been on a hot streak.

There is also a curious precedent: Dispatch released its first episode in October 2025 and finished all eight about a month later, with nominations already under way. That is why it was nominated last year and is eligible again in this edition.

What we still don't know

Being eligible is not the same as being nominated. The nominations are not out yet, and neither are the exact categories GTA 6 would compete in. Insider Gaming only speculates based on last year's list and warns that new categories could appear. No outlet has confirmed how the jury will handle such a tight window.

The outlets also differ slightly on the ceremony date. Instant Gaming says the night of Thursday, December 10 into Friday, December 11, while DualShockers says December 10. That is probably just a time zone difference, but it is not verified. In the meantime, you can brush up on the map and the characters.
