GTA 6 chess lands on Chess.com without Rockstar's blessing

Chess.com has swapped pieces and bots so a game feels like GTA 6, without a single official logo or character from the series. The change is live in its virtual version of chess, the one you open in a browser.

The site has no deal with Rockstar Games, Vandal reports. The outlet published the story on 2 November 2026 and notes the stunt is not part of the game's marketing campaign. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two Interactive has said anything about it.

Black carries most of the changes. Knights become dolphins, bishops show banknotes and pawns turn into police officers.

With white, the board fills with flamingos, vehicles and criminals in bandanas. They fit the Leonida map Rockstar has shown in trailers: beach, traffic and small-time crooks.

The rules stay the same, so a game plays exactly like chess. Only the look of the board changes.

The bots you play against have names, and the resemblance is not subtle. Jamie and Luna echo Jason and Lucia, the leads of GTA 6, according to Vandal.

The outlet calls them distant cousins of the two protagonists, which is one way to say it without stepping on Rockstar's legal ground. In the game the leads are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and the December 2023 reveal trailer puts her inside the Leonida Penitentiary.

For players, the nod is a way to kill the wait without turning on a console. Chess runs in Chess.com's virtual version, so the themed pieces show up without a download or a preload.

GTA 6 still lands on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version.

While Chess.com improvises on the board, GTA 6's official promotion keeps its own calendar. Rockstar has taken the game to the streets of Miami and other cities and put a limited edition DualSense controller on sale for 84.99 dollars.

There are more signs of how far the hype reaches. The Goodtime State collector's box, sold without the game inside, costs 399.99 dollars. The difference with the chess set is that those items carry Rockstar's name.

Chess.com has not published its own announcement and Rockstar has said nothing about the board, so no end date has been given for the themed pieces.

The next official data point is 9 November 2026, when Take-Two Interactive reports second quarter results. If the board changes before launch, players will see it mid-game.
