Buried in the files of the original Vice City was dialogue for an area that never existed: the Gator Keys. Today, the Leonida Keys in GTA 6 bring things full circle.

Hidden within the files of the original GTA Vice City (2002) is a ghost. It’s called Gator Keys and is an entire area that Rockstar planned but cut before release: an archipelago of keys inspired by the Florida Keys. The only evidence of its existence was buried in the game’s text file (american.gxt): a mission dialogue that was never recorded, in which Avery Carrington, the real estate developer, asks Tommy Vercetti to escort one of his representatives “to the Gator Keys.”

That content never received audio or a map. And that wasn’t the only clue: the game’s radio ads mention Shady Acres, a luxury resort owned by Carrington “in pristine wetlands” that also doesn’t physically appear anywhere. In Vice City Stories (2006), the name Gator Keys was mentioned in passing once again. The keys had been stuck in Rockstar’s limbo for 24 years.

GTA 6 Comes Full Circle

The Leonida Keys are one of the six official regions in GTA 6—“Gateway to Paradise,” according to the official postcard—and not just any region: Jason and Lucia live there at the start of the game. The community has already identified its real-world counterpart with surgical precision: the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys, and a broken bridge featured in the trailers that’s a carbon copy of the real Bahia Honda Rail Bridge (a railroad bridge built in 1912, converted to a highway in 1938, and abandoned in 1972, which still stands today parallel to the new bridge). There’s even a confirmed location: Key Lento, in Mariana County.

Important Note

The idea that the two are connected—the 2002 cut and the 2026 Keys—is the community’s interpretation, not a statement from Rockstar. No one from the studio has said, “We’re bringing back what we cut.” The facts, however, aren’t just theory. Rockstar wanted to include the Florida Keys in Vice City 24 years ago; they didn’t fit, and in November, they’ll be home to Jason and Lucia. It took two console generations for the cut content to return.

Did you know about Avery’s lost dialogue? What other cut area would you like to see brought back?
