GTA 6 is set in the quintessential fictional Miami, and Dexter Morgan is the quintessential fictional Miami killer. The theory was inevitable. And with Dexter: Resurrection premiering in July 2025 and renewed for a second season, the franchise is more alive than ever. But before you start dreaming about an Easter egg, it’s best to separate fact from fiction, because all sorts of rumors are circulating on this topic.

The REAL Reference in GTA 5

It exists and has been verified: in GTA Online’s Slasher mode (2015 Halloween update), the scene set in the Los Santos coroner’s office features a bulletin board with the names “Dexter Fisher” and “Morgan Price”. Dexter… Morgan. The double pun (with an extra nod to the toy company Fisher-Price) is documented by the GTA Wiki and several independent sources. Rockstar knows exactly who the Bay Harbor Butcher is.

What’s Been Blown Out of Proportion

• The famous 8 plastic-wrapped corpses sunk off the coast of Paleto Bay are always cited as a “reference to Dexter.” The GTA mystery community has for years attributed them to another story: the Infinity Killer (Merle Abrahams), a serial killer from the GTA 5 universe itself, with his own in-game narrative. The “bodies in bags underwater” motif already existed in 2002’s Vice City, four years BEFORE Dexter even existed.
• The boat named “Slice of Life” in GTA 5 (Dexter’s boat): this is claimed only by a fan site dedicated to the series, with no independent corroboration. Unconfirmed.
• And the big rumor from December 2025—“a Rockstar developer confirms Dexter-style missions and you’ll be able to buy his apartment”—was debunked by the series’ own showrunner, Clyde Phillips, who said he’d never heard anything like it in his life.

What Makes Sense to Expect

Vice City in 2002 couldn’t have referenced Dexter: the series premiered in 2006. GTA 6 is the first Vice City installment to be released while Dexter is still around, right in the middle of the series’ 20th anniversary and with Resurrection currently airing. A small nod would certainly be in keeping with Rockstar’s style: a boat, a name on a bulletin board, a coroner’s office. Entire Dexter missions? That’s just wishful thinking right now.
