Will there be an online or multiplayer mode in GTA 6? What about cross-play?

On November 19, 2026, you’ll start the campaign. There won’t be a new online mode waiting for you when you install the game.

This isn’t just our interpretation. In its June 2026 earnings release, Take-Two described the launch as a “single-player experience”. And when Strauss Zelnick was asked about the online business model during the May 21, 2026, earnings call, he replied: “Since we haven’t announced an online version of GTA 6, it would be premature to discuss it.”

Rockstar hasn’t even mentioned the name “GTA 6 Online.” Any specific dates you read out there are just third-party speculation.

Will it happen? Almost certainly. When? Look at the track record

• GTA V was released on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online launched on October 1: fourteen days later.
• Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on October 26, 2018, and Red Dead Online entered beta in late November: one month later, with staggered access, and the beta didn’t end until May 2019.

And it wasn’t a coincidence. Leslie Benzies, former president of Rockstar North, explained that they separated GTA Online by two weeks on purpose, so that it would be perceived as “a different entity” from the base game. The online mode waits for its moment so as not to overshadow the campaign.

Applying that pattern, the reasonable window runs from December 2026 to spring 2027. The mainstream press points to early 2027, arguing that December is a bad month to launch a game-as-a-service.

What about cross-play between PS5 and Xbox?

Absolutely nothing has been announced. It’s one of the most frequently asked questions and one of the least answered.

The only information to go on is precedent, and it doesn’t inspire optimism: the current GTA Online has never had cross-play between platforms. That doesn’t determine what GTA 6 will do—the game is coming out only on current-generation consoles, which is a simpler scenario—but as long as Rockstar doesn’t say anything, assuming cross-play is a leap of faith.

What about my progress in the current GTA Online?

It’s intact. GTA Online for GTA V is still up and running, and your money, properties, and character remain untouched. This was confirmed by the president of Take-Two in February 2026. It makes perfect sense: that online mode has been one of the industry’s biggest cash cows for over a decade, and shutting it down on launch day would be throwing it away.

A loose detail worth noting

An analysis of the game’s listing on the Xbox Store revealed that GTA 6 isn’t distributed as a single package, but rather in several separate blocks (campaign, upgrade to the Ultimate Edition, pre-order content, and one additional unidentified block). If online mode ends up being its own bundle, Rockstar could release and update it as a separate product, just as it did when it separated GTA Online from GTA V in 2022.
